DAY ONE | THURSDAY MARCH 24TH
darric had to work the night before we left for utah, so we let him get some sleep while the rest of us got ready. then me, kenzie and max took the super anxious dogs to the doggie district. i was seriously considering never coming back for them until i was reminded that they were just really nervous. around 11:00, after stopping at the 7-11 for snacks and drinks, we jumped on the freeway and we were off.
there was still road work going on in the gorge so it took us some extra time to get through there. it wasn't too bad though. we arrived in st. george around 1:30 (utah time) and darric was nice enough to let us stop at cracker barrel for lunch. kenzie and i got breakfast, max and madi got mac and cheese. and darric got chicken fried steak. he didn't really care for it too much, so he probably won't let us come back next time. kenzie offered to buy max a hamster toy he was asking for. we questioned her motives, but let her go ahead with the purchase. the hamster was later named fred.
before going too much further, we stopped for a diet cokanut drink (and whatever everybody else wanted). then we drove up the mountain to the utah house where mom, dad, jen, mason, grace, jodie, quincy, beckam, piper and posie were all waiting. and then we did the following... watched a few of the kids play pie face (piper LOVED getting whip cream slapped into her face),
watched posie run and crash into the couch cushion (several times),
some played a short game of kickball,
some colored with chalk,
some ran around shirtless while shooting cap guns,
some watched a movie,
some had a breathing treatment,
some put together a puzzle,
some got in the picture with the finished puzzle,
some flew a kite (thanks to all the wind we had), some rode the quads and we all ate french dip, mac and cheese and squash for dinner and then we sang happy birthday to jodie and enjoyed some chocolate cake.
then i busted out the five packs of glow sticks i've had sitting in a drawer at home and all the kids decorated themselves for a couple quick pictures outside in the dark. it was chilly out there. me, darric and my dad stayed out a little longer to check out the bright moon and try to find the north star.
darric and i slept in the room that you used to enter through at the front of the house. mom and dad put a bed in there on a piece of carpet. i thought it was pretty nice. and we stayed all cozy with a little heater.
DAY TWO | FRIDAY MARCH 25TH
mason woke up this morning throwing up. and i guess piper didn't sleep very well all night because she was having trouble breathing and her body was itchy. so, jennifer and jodie decided to take their crew home today after breakfast. (they all came up on wednesday together) for breakfast we had french toast (which most of the kids smothered with syrup AND powdered sugar), biscuits and gravy, sausage and bacon.
me, darric and kenzie drove into town (enterprise) to get drinks and then a few things from the grocery store that we needed for dinner. on our way back we passed jen's white suburban and waved. upon our arrival back at the house, we discovered beckam and quincy lucked out and got to stay. so what did we decided to do today? geocache, of course.
we drove to modena in search of the _____ cache. but first, let's take a selfie if front of one of the abandoned buildings we checked out.
then we walked across the train tracks to the water tower and started searching for that cache. we looked and looked. all around that tower, all while shouting out reminders to the younger ones to watch where they stepped (there were a few boards with nails in them). after looking for probably more than half an hour, wiggling bolts, looking down pipes and peeking in a door, we couldn't find it. so frustrating.
(a huge nest sitting up in the rafters)
we drove across the highway to an easier cache. it was so easy, the description on the app pretty much said, if you can't find it, you shouldn't be geocaching. i think the girls signed their names on this paper that was rolled up in an old film canister.
we drove just a little ways down that dirt road and checked out the cache we found the last time we were here. the one in the railroad nail. the screw on it must have been a little rusted because it was a pain to get open, but madi finally got it. and there we saw max's cute handwriting. we also saw someone's stamp and realized we probably need to get one soon.
from there, we drove into enterprise for lunch at marv's. max got one of their long corn dogs. kenzie got a cheeseburger. madi had ____ and darric got the _____. i got taquitos and picadilly chips (i was hoping they were fried pickles but they were more like a short stubby tater-tot like fry. and they were really good in the fry sauce.) the kids and darric all got ice-cream when we were done eating and then we were off for another cache.
this one was called the rabbit hole. to get to it, we drove all the way up 200 east st. then we made a right towards calf springs creek and took another right at the first dirt road we got to. the spot looked a bit sketchy. there were a few deer carcasses and several bullet shells. but that didn't stop us from walking a ways up the trail to find the cache.
madi was the one to find it this time (that could have been because i asked darric to let someone else find one for once) there were a few treasures in the can. some children's sunglasses, a hannah montana happy meal toy ____ we left a little dog that the kids got out of the toy vending machine at marv's. the boys signed their names this time and then i found out later, no one ended up taking anything.
we searched for some treasures. max and beckam both found parts of a jaw. they thought they were sooo cool, especially when used as a gun. (max wasn't too sure about it at first, but once he picked it up and realized it was harmless, he was off looking for more treasures)
and dad found some good cow pies. (he's going to use them as soil for some plants at home)
we hand sanitized and then stopped at the grocery store so grandpa could see if they restocked his new favorite drink (raspberry flavored arrowhead sparkling water). they didn't have anymore. grandma let the kids all pick out some candy. and then we stopped at the convenience store so darric and i could get drinks and the girls could look in the rock store. kenzie (and bryan) and quincy each got bracelets made out of different stones. (don't worry, madi got one the next day as we were leaving town)
we headed back to the house and kenzie started making the dough for our navajo tacos. i messed up and didn't bring enough yeast, but she managed to make it work. about a half hour later, we had dinner. it was yummy. before bedtime, we all gathered in the family room and watched the last movie in the hunger games series. i think we all enjoyed it, except quincy, she left to do something that was a little less scary. ;)
DAY THREE | SATURDAY MARCH 26TH
this morning, kenzie made scones with the leftover dough and grandma made some more biscuits and gravy. we ate, got ready, cleaned up, watched some of the movie bolt and then packed our stuff up to come home.
we stopped in st. george to get drinks (including my diet cokanut) and snacks. a few of us got different odd flavored chips. darric and kenzie are now fans of the biscuits and gravy lay's. we got lucky and didn't hit any traffic in the gorge and made it home around 1:00. darric, kenzie and madi went and picked up bryan and then the dogs. and while i did laundry, darric and max ran to the store to get stuff to bbq. (shrimp and pizzas. for dessert, root beer floats)
it was a good last few days.
