We had a three day weekend this week for President's Day. Darric and I spent it watching volleyball.
DAY ONE | SAT, FEB 18th
We had to be at the World Market Center tents at 7:00 this morning (which meant I had to get up at 5:15 am). It pretty much rained all day. Most of the day, it was just a light sprinkle, but it came down good for a little while there. We could see it from Court 1, where the girls played their three games. And every now and then, some of that rain would drip onto the court.
Their first game was at 8:00. They played Legacy and won 25-22, 25-19. Darric didn't think they were going to win very much during this tournament. After all, they were playing in the 18's Open Division. The top dogs. And they won their first game. Boo-yah.
They had two hours before their next game, so Darric and I went to get a coffee from the Grouchy John's truck. I got the Almond Roca Mocha (yum) and Darric just got regular coffee. We went and sat in the car for a little while and then went back in to watch the other teams play.
Game two was against Ka Ulukoa. They lost this game. And they lost pretty bad, but shouldn't have. We weren't quite sure what was going on with the team. The final score was 18-25, 8-25. Ugh.
Game three was right after. The girls got over what ever problems they were having during the last game and ended up winning against Leaside 25-19, 24-26, 16-14. And even after an ugly second game, they still managed ending up in first place in their pool.
We ended up leaving there around 2:00 that afternoon. While we were gone, Max went with Beckam to watch Grace's soccer game, in the rain. Then they went to Carmine's for lunch. And then to hang out at Beckam's house. And later, he went with all of the Meltons to dinner at Taco Y Taco. And around the time the rest of us were finishing up our Laurita's dinner, he came home. Madison... she did her make-up and watched several episodes of Friends.
DAY TWO | SUN, FEB 19th
We had to be back to the WMC at 7:00 this morning. (Aren't three day weekends for sleeping in?) First game was supposed to be at 8:00, but because of water dripping all over the court, there was about an hour delay. We didn't have any rain today, but there was condensation on the roof.
During the wait, hair got braided, sore muscles were rolled out and there was some dancing going on. None by Kenzie though. Around 9:00, the girls finally got to play. They won their first match against the Renovators 26-28, 25-19, 15-12.
We had an hour before the next game, so we went and got coffee from Grouchy John's again. I tried the Sith this time. Dark chocolate and coconut. Tasted almond joy-ish. Darric just got his boring coffee.
Nevada Jrs. won their second match too against Livewire. The final score was 25-21, 25-21.
We had two hours to kill before the next game, so we ate. I was pretty excited about getting to eat from the food trucks. We chose Engine 1 Pizza. We both got the pepperoni pizza and a soda. The pizza was pretty good. We sat on the curb and enjoyed it and then went and sat in the car for a bit. On our way back in, I had to stop at the Cookie Bar food truck. I decided on the Booze Munch (puffed corn coated with rum, butter and brown sugar) and a Limoncello cookie (which I pronounced wrong). They were both VERY good. And just so you don't think I'm a total pig, I did share some of the munch.
Nevada Jrs. played hard in their third match. But, unfortunately lost to Arizona Sky (who finished 9th in their division). The final score was 24-26, 21-25.
They ended up having to do a playoff match. We weren't sure what time yet, but we wouldn't have to be back there until 5:30 at the earliest. It was 3:30. Already a long day. We decided to leave and drove down Charleston all the way to Eastern then all the way down to Sunset. Darric and Kenzie were wanting to eat at Aloha Grill, but when we got there, we noticed they closed at 3:00 on Sundays. So we went down to Stephanie and had dinner at L&L.
While we were there, we found out the girls didn't need to be back until 6:30. So we went and grabbed Wendy's and took it home to Max and Madi. They were both just chillin' all day. Madi was starting to feel sick. Which meant, she got to lay on the couch and watch some more Friends. Max played video/computer games. And turned me down quickly when I asked if he wanted to go watch Kenzie's last game.
We were back at the WMC by 6:30. Darric and I got another Grouchy John's coffee. Same drinks we got this morning. The girls didn't play until 7:30. Against SSVC. There were two hired refs at this game. And they were calling everything. At least five times, net was called on the other team. And a few times they called lifting on Casey. I'm sure there were a couple doubles called too, but they didn't seem to notice the no-touch that lost us a point. They played well, but some of the girls didn't have enough left to beat this team. The final score was 15-25, 26-24, 13-15.
DAY THREE | MON, FEB 20th
We didn't have to be at the WMC until 9:00 this morning. So we got to sleep in a little bit. Eli came with us. The girls played at 10:00. Their game was just a little off this morning and they ended up losing to Synergy Force. The final score was 21-25, 22-25.
Nevada Jrs. finished 25th (out of about 107 teams) in the silver bracket in the 18's open division. Pretty dang awesome. Especially for a shorter team with only one 6 foot player.
The girls had to stay and work the game after their loss. Which stunk for all of us. We finally left those tents and Darric took us to Cafe Zupas to pick up lunch. We brought it home to eat, so Max and Madi could enjoy it with us too.
Here are Kenzie's stats from this weekend's tournament...
She played 19 sets
Had 205 attempts
85 kills and 21 errors
Her passing average was 2.2
She served 62 times
Had 6 aces and 6 errors
