last weekend we trimmed up the front yard. and this weekend, it was time to do some work in the back. friday evening we started out at home depot, grabbing the supplies we needed for the bubblers. then we headed to one of my favorite places, star nursery.
after looking around for a little bit, we decided on two japanese blueberry trees, two japanese boxwood shrubs, two mock orange shrubs and an apple tree. max wanted the apple tree. we tried to talk him into some of the prettier looking fruit trees that were already blossoming. but he was set on getting an apple tree. after checking them all out, he chose the red delicious. darric asked if he was going to give it a name and he replied "it already has a name... red delicious".
we got up saturday morning, ran to get donuts and then swung by home depot again for an end piece for the bubblers, a wood barrel, some flowers, mulch and soil. then we came home and got started. the boys got red delicious in the ground and i got to digging the hole for one of the bigger trees. i can't tell you had many times i yelled about all the stupid rocks that got in my shovel's way. and all i could do was laugh when i got a face full of mud after thinking it would help to put some water in the hole.
i ended up digging four of the holes, max dug four holes too (with a little help) and darric dug the little trench all around the yard so he could bury the tubing back up (since it had all been pulled out). he planted the trees and bushes and got the new bubblers to all of them.
him and max had to run to home depot again to get some more mulch. he ended up picking out an azalea shrub too. i guess he wasn't too fond of the other ones i picked out. (we'll see whose looks better in a couple months) max was a rock star of a helper, he only took a couple breaks to jump on the trampoline. he surprised darric by filling the wheelbarrow up with two bags of mulch that he got out of the back of the truck and then wheeled them into the backyard all by himself.
we finished everything up sunday morning. and i think we all agree that it already looks so much better back there. i'm sure in a week or two, it will look even better when our old tree is covered in pretty green leaves. (as long as we can keep the two dodo birds from digging up and eating all the new shrubs and mulch)
